Our other cat, Plucky, has his favorite place to be…on the lap of any one using a computer (luckily I am writing this at work or it would be much slower going and by the end I would be covered in cat fur)! All of these gizmos and features help us take better pictures. However, until the camera is designed to point itself, we can still take pictures that are less than striking.

A few of the problems we might have with our photos can include the following.

• Undesirable "stuff" in the background.
  
• To much back light
  
• Improper focus
  
• Our subject may have their eyes closed
  
• Some of our subjects may be looking away.

God forbid that any of these photo maladies could happen to us. We may even take a picture that is free of these problems, but is just unremarkable. We take care to avoid these common problems, but still our photos lack pop. Maybe the images are ok, but the photo just does not have any character.

Imagine two vertical and two horizontal lines cutting your image into 9 areas. This pattern creates four spots where the horizontal and vertical lines intersect. Your photo will have much more impact if you place the focal points of your photo on these intersections. Images of people almost always look more interesting if the subject is off center. This type of placement will leave an open area opposite the subject. It is best to leave the open space in the direction the subject is looking. Try it out and you will be pleased with the results.

Get Close

Many times we are too far from our subjects. Move in! Most modern point-and-shoot cameras will focus properly as close as 3 feet from the subject. The idea is to make the picture have a subject. If your subject is a person, fill the picture with the subject. Capture the expression on their face.

Pay Attention

To the BackgroundYou may well have a great shot of your subject, but the background of your photo may ruin the shot. A plain background works better to highlight your subject. A busy background confuses the eye and steals attention from your subject. The garbage can or laundry basket have a place in our homes, but not in the background of our photos.

Experiment with portrait and landscape aspects. We call it "portrait" when a picture is more vertical than horizontal. When a picture is wider than tall, we call it "landscape." These terms are the result of classic artists painting portraits in a taller format and landscapes in a wider format.

Many times an image that would seem to be a landscape scene makes a very interesting image in portrait mode. Just turn your camera ninety degrees an snap another shot of the same subject to compare portrait and landscape modes. Photos often become more interesting when they seem to break the rules a bit.

Do Not Fear Black & White

Most of us have an image on our camera or computer that looks pretty dull and boring. The composition may be great, but the sky is gray and the grass is a little blue. Converting an image like that to grayscale sometimes will produce a classy, nostalgic image that soon becomes a favorite.

I know all the specs and bells and whistles can be distracting. But let me lay it on the line. ANY cheap digital camera today (outside of the realm of toys) will allow you to take and print a standard size snapshot just fine. I'm not talking a lower quality print, either.
Almost all cameras on today's shelves are at least a 2.0 megapixel rating or above. This is more than adequate for a standard 4" x 6" for your photo album. Don't be fooled by believing newer is better.
Now, it must be said that if you will blow your photos up to 8 ½" x 11" or more, maybe a 2 megapixel camera will begin to show some picture deterioration.
But buy a camera that will get you started pointing-and-clicking. Then later decide what more you may need and compare digital cameras. You may find that you are just as happy with this digital camera as you were in the good old days with your 110 instamatic. (remember those?)
Number Two: Take too many pictures. That's right, go all out!
Many of us are still in the mode of being very careful to take the 'perfect keepsake' pictures for our albums. Of course we still want only the best pictures that capture life's fleeting moments. But think of this, today's standard camera film and developing costs (in my area) around 40 cents (US) per photo. And that's whether it's a good pic or a bad one!
But how much does my digital photo cost me if I don't like it? NOTHING. (Maybe a little use of the batteries to take, view, and delete it.) So take way too many pictures. Take chances. Take spontaneous pictures. You might just be surprised that some of these will be your favorites years from now.
Number Three: Look at your pics immediately. It's even better than the old Polaroid cameras that spit out the photos for you. Today you just turn your camera around, push a button, and everyone can immediately enjoy what you have accomplished.
Truth is, I think I have enjoyed looking at my digital pictures on the camera more that I have the printed versions. If you can't see all the fun in this, just watch any group of teen girls at the mall taking photos of each other, then laughing at the results.
Number Four: Take it to the experts. They'll know what to do.
Actually printing and downloading (even placing your pictures online) is relatively easy. But don't let that hassle stop you from getting started.
Just about any photo shop or major department store or drug store can take your camera (or memory card) and print off any one or all of the photos you want. And it's pretty cheap, too.
See, this digital camera stuff is nothing to be afraid of. So, go ahead and dust off that digital camera you got last Christmas. Or run out and buy a little point-and-click style camera. Then go take lots of pictures, look at them and laugh, then print out the ones you like.
Oh, yeah, don't forget to delete the embarrassing ones.
